Behind Closed Doors: The Wounds We Carry

Behind Closed Doors: Stories of Families Healing in Singapore

This is Part 2 of the Behind Closed Doors series. The stories are drawn from the experiences of clients supported by Viriya Community Services — a social service agency serving families across Singapore since 2001. Names and identifying details have been changed to protect privacy. The emotions and experiences are real.

If any part of what you read feels familiar, please know: you are not alone, and help is available.

Part 2: The Wounds We Carry — Trauma, Complex PTSD, and Healing in Singapore

On the outside, she was holding it together. Carefully dressed, composed, smiling on cue. On the inside, she was exhausted from feeling like too much — yet never enough.

She had been referred to Viriya following a suicide attempt, but what brought her there ran far deeper than that moment. She could not explain why her emotions overwhelmed her. Why she could not remember days at a time. Why small things that others dismissed could send her into panic or despair. She had been told she was just too sensitive. But no matter how hard she tried, she could not simply let things go.

What is Complex PTSD — and how is it different from PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is typically associated with a single traumatic event — an accident, assault, or disaster. Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) is different. It develops from prolonged, repeated trauma, often in childhood — experiences of neglect, emotional unavailability, bullying, or living in an unpredictable environment. The symptoms can look like mood swings, difficulty trusting others, a fragmented sense of self, or emotional reactions that seem disproportionate to the situation.

C-PTSD is not a character flaw. It is the nervous system’s response to years of feeling unsafe. And it is treatable.

Growing up without safety: her story

Her earliest memories were not violent, but they were painful in ways that stayed. She remembered sitting alone while her family laughed together in another room — laughter she was never invited into. She remembered falling and scraping her knee, and her mother walking past without stopping. Moments that seemed small. But repeated often enough, they shaped a belief: you do not matter.

At school, she was quietly excluded, talked about behind her back. She began to believe she was broken. ‘These words are ironed onto me,’ she once said. ‘Heavy and cold, and stuck to her for all to see.’

Even in her closest friendships, she never felt fully safe. She would overthink every message she sent and received. If someone took too long to reply, she would spiral. Entire days blurred into shame or numbness. There were times she wondered if it would be easier to stop trying altogether.

How therapy helped: imagery rescripting and building a safe relationship

By the time she started therapy at Viriya, she already had psychiatric support. What she needed was not another diagnosis. She needed a place to be human — to say ‘I feel like I am too much’ and not be met with silence or solutions, but with presence.

Through a gentle process called imagery rescripting, she returned to painful memories — but this time as her adult self. She imagined sitting beside her younger self in those lonely moments. Not to relive the pain, but to offer what had never been given: comfort, validation, safety.

‘You did not deserve this. You are not the problem.’

She began to notice the harsh inner voice that had followed her all her life. And with time, she learned to question it. ‘That is not me. That is something I learned to believe.’

Her pain, once like iron, has begun to soften. The past has not disappeared. But it no longer has the final word.

You are not broken. You are not beyond healing. Complex PTSD is treatable — with the right kind of support.
